Spalding Model Tractor Show run twice a year, in April and October.
I’ve photographed the Spalding Model Tractor Show since 2023. The organisers needed a complete visual record of the show floor, exhibitor displays and visitor atmosphere, ready to use immediately after the event.
Model shows are a genuine technical challenge. Large halls lit with mixed artificial lighting, crowded aisles, and subjects ranging from an entire display stand down to a model the size of a hand.
The brief
Coverage across the full day, capturing the scale of the hall, the detail of individual models, and genuine visitor reactions.
The images needed to be usable for the show’s own social channels, press submissions to the model engineering press, and next year’s promotional material.
The turnaround mattered: first selection was needed within 24 hours while the show was still being talked about online.
The approach
I worked documentary-style, moving continuously through the hall rather than setting up in one spot, so the coverage reflects how the show actually felt to attend. For the detail shots, shooting wide open to isolate individual models against a busy background.
The people matter as much as the machines. The most-used images every year are the ones of exhibitors talking to visitors — that’s what sells a show to someone deciding whether to come.
